Concéntrico Festival 2025: Design and Construction of a Permanent Urban Climate Island in Logroño

To offer a radical answer to the question of contemporary ecology does not mean disguising the project with a verdant decor. Against the consolatory and trendy attitude of green washing, False Mirror Office proposes to awaken the conscience of the user through a critical project that integrates the effects of global warming and proposes solutions to them for the creations of a new Tropical European style.

In Spain’s increasingly torrid climate of the coming decades, metropolitan shoppers will give way to contemporary Bedouins in search of shade, water and refreshment. In the midst of a desert-quarter parched by asphalt and concrete, they will have no choice but to find solace in the mirage-archetypes of
tropical survival habitats. The caves dug into the earth of the Matmata and the shady tents of the Tuareg nomads encapsulate the fundamental principles of the project: seeking the oasis, digging underground, entrenching between embankments, sheltering under fabric canopies and gathering around a central space to reconstitute the idea of a collectivity.
Seen from afar, between the tropical essences planted on its embankment and the reflective sheet of water surrounding it, the oasis of Logrono will stands out on the horizon through a dynamic interplay of shapes and colours drawn from local folklore. Long live the new vernacular !

Learning from Vernacular Architecture
The oasis of Logrono originates in the combination of two archetypal forms born in the desert to protect against the sun, lower the temperature of the habitat and provide as much shade as possible.

A passive thermal conditioning machine
Through the use of highly permeable ground, the oasis re- servoir acts as a basin for the infiltration of water into the ground.

The fabric with which the Logrono oasis is dressed is not only a means of responding to the need to use organic and recycled materials. It is a speaking dress and the geometries and textures that cover it are inspired by regional folklore to make the project a welcoming and understandable device for all.

The creation of an oasis in Logrono is made possible by de- mineralising the soil, moving it and placing it in an annular embankment and, finally, planting it with tropical essences compatible with the area’s tropical-like context.
